A timely arrival is key to reducing audition nerves. Due to parking limitations and queues at the registration desk, plan to arrive at least a half hour before start. This will give you ample time to confirm registration, receive numbers, and fully warm up. Once the doors close, the audition begins and dancers arriving late will not be admitted.
Dancers will first be called into the studio by their number and will be asked to introduce themselves to the Panel and answer a short question.
Each Group will begin at the barre with a strong emphasis on technique. Given the differences in ballet terminology used across classrooms, all combinations will be demonstrated once to ensure that dancers understand the exercise. Pay close attention, not just to the steps but to the instructor's body placement.
After barre, dancers will move into center, which will include choreography from The Nutcracker repertoire. The class will be divided into groups who will each demonstrate the choreography. Dancers may be requested to repeat in multiple groups.
Can I submit a video audition?
While we understand the challenges associated with traveling to auditions, we are currently not accepting video auditions. If a dancer cannot attend either of the audition dates, please reach out at info@ybtheatre.org
Do dancers audition for specific roles?
No. Dancers will be given age-appropriate choreography from The Nutcracker that showcases technical ability. Call-backs may be required for principal, soloist or demi-soloist roles.
How many dancers will be accepted into the cast?
The cast size depends on the results of the audition, but ranges from 30 - 55 dancers.
How much is the registration fee?
Registration fees are $25 per dancer.
When will dancers be notified if they've been cast?
YBT aims to post the casting announcement by June 2nd, 2026.
Do families and dancers need to stay the whole time?
Due to limited space, dancers in groups C & D who are younger than 10 should stay only for their timeslot and that leave immediately after. Families should not wait in the lobby and should return at the end of the audition to pick up their dancers. All auditions are closed, without viewing.
Should we plan to attend both audition days?
Dancers are welcome to attend both audition days, if available. This is not a requirement and both auditions will be structured the same using the same criteria.
